Dance producer and curator, and an author of a number of dance publications. As a dancer she has been active in contemporary dance and contact improvisation. A graduate of the Institute of Polish Culture at the University of Warsaw, she has worked at Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź, where she has produced exhibitions, new artistic projects, and edited publications. Together with Joanna Chitruszko, she programs "Ruch w samym centrum uwagi" ("Movement at the Very Centre of Attention"), an installment of the Studio Dance Scene 2018 cycle.
Together with Jacek Owczarek, she created the International Dance Cinema Festival in Łódź (2002-2006), and a number of dance film programmes presented at various dance and film festivals. She was the curator of the "Nowe Horyzonty Tańca" ("New Horizons of Dance") series featured in the International Film Festival Era Nowe Horyzonty in Wrocław (together with Jacek Gębura), as well as a series of presentations of dance films and installations Mirror Me by Shona McCullagh, presented at the 8th edition of the festival.
As a producer, she co-created the Warsaw-based International Dance Improvisation Festival Sic! (together with Ilona Trybyła, 2007-2012; two editions of the festival were held jointly with the Ad Libitum Festival). Together with the Łódź-based Physical Studio and Dawid Lorence, she invited David Zambrano to participate in the production of the Soul Project/PL performance (2013). For a number of years, she has co-created the programme of accompanying events at the National Contemporary Dance Workshops in Połczyn-Zdrój.
Sonia Nieśpiałowska-Owczarek was the curator of the exhibition Przyjdźcie, pokażemy Wam co robimy. O improwizacji tańca (Come, We’ll Show You What We Do; 2013, with Katarzyna Słoboda) presented at ms² Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź, which comprised a space for improvisation, large scale screenings of documentation from the years 1970-1983, and a cycle of several dozen performative events. Nieśpiałowska-OWczarek is the editor of several books, including Wykłady / rozmowy o improwizacji tańca (Lectures / Conversations on Dance Improvisation; 2012), an anthology of 25 texts titled Przyjdźcie, pokażemy Wam co robimy. O improwizacji tańca (Come, We’ll Show You What We Do; together with Katarzyna Słoboda, 2013), an anthology of 16 texts by artists and choreographers titled Taniec współczesny w Polsce w drugiej połowie XX wieku (Contemporary Dance in Poland in the Second Half of the 20th Century; together with Anna Banach and Juliusz Grzybowski, 2017), and a book on Zorka Wollny Ofelie. Ikonografia szaleństwa (Ophelias: An Iconography of Madness; together with Zorka Wolny and Anka Herbut, 2018).
